Start Your Own In-home Daycare!

Miscellaneous Background Information about Starting a Daycare

1. Exersaucers and Jolly Jumpers will not be allowed.

2.The whole process usually takes 2-3 months.

3. Register for your Health and Safety classes quickly. The classes fill up fast!!

4. They will also talk with you about being on the food program. If you are good at staying up with things (i.e. small amounts of paperwork, but Daily) this helps you to be reimbursed some of the money that you use for Snacks and Meals. They do have surprise visits every few months and will look to make sure everything is up-to-date. I have found it to be very helpful in that they give you all kinds of meal ideas and nutritional information and it really is not difficult to do.

5. Their is a license renewal fee every year of $60.

6. Here is a breakdown of the number of kids you can watch.

1. You do not need to be licensed if you are only watching one family. (i.e. Two kids from the same family and that's it. Two kids from different families requires a license.)

2. You can watch up to eight kids (including your own) in your home with the following guidelines:
* 4 infants (under the age of two)
or
* 3 infants (under the age of two and 3 kids over the age of two
or
* 2 infants, and a minimum of 2 that are six years of age or more + 4 more over the age of two. Note: As of January 2004, a provider can have one child age six or older and the second child can be younger if you can show proof that he/she is enrolled in school.
Example: Jane Doe is 4 yrs. 10 months enrolled in year-around school starting July 12, 2004 track C.

7. You are allowed to be licensed for more children if you have an assistant. A large license requires additional steps and regulations to be adhered to.

8. If you change residences you must reapply for a new license, (the license follows the provider AND the house not just the provider alone.)

Steps for Starting a Home Day Care

The Department of Health and Human Services has put together a licensing certification process that makes the safety of the children the top priority.

The following steps are required:

1. Call Family Child Care Licensing at 916-875-2808. You must attend an orientation which is held every Wednesday from 9am-12:30pm @ 7171 Bowling Drive Suite #100 in Sacramento. Be sure to see which Wednesday will fit into your schedule before you call, so that you can register on the spot.

2. At the orientation you will be given an Application Packet that will need to be filled out completely and returned with a $60 fee*. The application contains a Criminal Record Statement as well as a current TB Test Results Statement. *Note: The fee was raised from $50 in August 2004.

3. Register for 15 hours of required health and safety training. Your Local Red Cross offers these classes as well as some Parks and Recreation Departments.

4. Next you will receive a 2nd packet of information. In it you will receive a Live Scan Application which you must take to the Dept. of Justice. This application is time sensitive. You must get everything back in within 30 days, or you have to start the process again. The Live Scan (fingerprinting) is required by everyone in your home over the age of 18. A fee is required. In the 2nd packet, you will also receive a safety checklist, so that you can prepare your home for the Day Care Licensing Inspection. Note: This is where a lot of your household plants may come into question. Many are poisonous and will have to be removed.

4. Once your Department of Justice Clearance has come through, then you will be able to schedule your pre-licensing visit with your assigned licensing representative.

5. Lastly comes the licensing recommendation.
